BRIEF HISTORY OF CYA

Cambodia Youth Action (CYA) was changed from Environmental Beauty (EB) the organization that was register legally with Ministry of Interior in 2006. In late 2009, all EB members gathered together to reform EB management and structure. And after implemented its projects successfully within 3 years, EB has built partnership with many local and international NGOs, and institutions and members of EB also have learnt a lots from EBfs projects and partners projects so we would like to extend more projects by focusing on young people development (knowledge and skills).

CYA aims to educate young people on self leading and management and to promote young people participation in voluntary work for community development and environmental preservation through practical action such participating and organizing workcamp, doing community voluntary services, and learning and sharing with young people over the globe.

 DATE AND VANUE

The workcamp will be held on 5th to 18th August 2010 in CHAMBAK E-CO TOURISM community, Kampong Speu province. Itfs about 150 Km from Phnom Penh capital city and it takes about 2 hours to get from the Phnom Penh International Airport.

 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Chambak community located in the west of Phnom Penh it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes by bus. Chambak is an eco-tourism site which was established since 2003. There are 9 villages with 29 home stays. The first international work camp was organized here by NVDA and YRDP on May 2009 and another International Chambak Mini Workcamp was organized by Cambodian Youth Action (CYA) on February 2010. After organizing International Chambak Mini Workcamp, CYA found that Chambak is good place for workcamp because there are many things we can do with local people to benefit them and also learn from simple life of local people as well.

This project aims to:

1. To help preserve and raise awareness on keeping good environment to community people, local and international tourists, and volunteers

2. To encourage local and international youth in participating in social action through voluntary service.

3. To enlarge the knowledge of local students about other countries and motivate them to speak English.

4. To experience a simple life of local people in the real countryside of Cambodia and to exchange culture between participants and local people

5. To spread out the idea of voluntary service and international workcamp to local people

6. To build friendly relationship between participants and local people

 FREE TIME

Workcamp participants could arrange any activities for their daily free time. However, there will be one full free day and CYA will help organize it for the group. The camp leader will provide you some information needed about how to spend free time easily. Letfs enjoy it together!

 WHAT WE EXPECT?

We expect all volunteers are read and understood this information. Be in time and stay the entire length of work camp.

We expect all volunteers are aware about the concept of international volunteer service, especially International Work Camp which is not a cheap way of spending your holiday time but a voluntary activity that need your high motivation and willing to achieve a certain goal together with your team.

Realize that living condition in Cambodia is much difference from your home (no warm water, no air-conditioning, not easy to access to international phone and internet, no soft beds, and the food is also differences etc).

All volunteers should understand about the aims of the work camp and realize that learning about Cambodian way and social contact is more important than manual work.

We expect all volunteers are open minded, leave prejudice behind and show initiative.

Only English should be spoken in the camp even other participants are not join in the conversation

Volunteers should understand the situation of spending time with local people who do not speak English very well. Volunteers should try the effort in trying to communicate in basic Khmer language or other way of communicating (work, pictures, gestures, etc). If you will try, you will be amazed how quick you will learn basic Khmer language.

Do not complain because the changing schedule during the camp, itfs depending on condition and situation. So bring some flexibilities and you will stay relax and avoid a lot of stress and frustration for yourself.

Creativities and ideas for work, discussions, the campsite, excursion and are expected to come from the group during the camp. Share your thought and idea!!!
